Operational information

Smooth Radio provides a high quality radio service for the mature adult listener. Broadcasting 24 hours a day, the service is designed to satisfy the needs and interests of people in the West Midlands aged 50 and over.

Our emphasis is on familiar, melodic music from the last five decades with a sprinkling of current contemporary music.

Most peak-time programming output on Smooth Radio is locally produced from within the transmission area. At other times, programmes are shared across the Smooth Radio network. On weekdays, the Breakfast Show (6 -10am), Afternoon Show (1-4pm) and the Drivetime show (4-8pm) are all locally produced. The Mark Goodier Show (10am–1pm) is produced in London and broadcast across the Smooth network.

The Weekday and Sunday Evening Show (8pm-midnight) and Overnight Show (Midnight-6am) are produced for the Smooth network from Newcastle. On Saturday evenings, Andy Peebles Soul Train Show (6-9pm) and Reeling in the Year (9pm-midnight) are both produced and broadcast from Newcastle across the Smooth Radio network.

On Saturday the Afternoon Show (2-6pm) is locally produced. On Sunday, locally produced shows include the Mid-Morning show (10am-1pm) and the Sunday Evening Show (5pm-8pm). At all other times over the weekend, programmes are shared with the Smooth Radio network and originate from either London or Newcastle.

The station uses a sophisticated automation system for some of its off peak programming. Automated hours include Saturday and Sunday (6-7am and 1-2pm).

On occasions we may broadcast programmes from outside the transmission area. These are chosen on editorial merit, of interest to our listeners. We currently broadcast the Chris Tarrant Show on Saturday (10am-1pm). This show is produced in London for the GMG Radio Group.

Specialist programmes

Smooth Radio is required by the terms of its OFCOM format to provide “at least 12 hours of identifiable specialist music programmes each week.”
